Candle Care & Safety

What is the best way to care for my coconut apricot candle?
Hey there, book lover! Do you want to keep your candle burning bright? Give it some TLC!

  • Start by trimming the wick to ¼” before each use.
  • Next, light it up for 3-4 hours at a time to prevent any wax build-up or tunneling.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended or within reach of precious pets, excessive drafts, or little ones. Safety first, y’all! If you notice a high flame or the container gets too hot, don’t panic - just extinguish the flame, wait for it to cool down, trim the wick and start again.

How can I keep my candles looking their best?
Want to keep your candles looking as gorgeous as the first day you bought them? Here are some tips.

  • Avoid exposing them to intense light or storing them in warm or humid areas as this can cause discoloration or fading.
  • Try to keep them away from direct sunlight or strong lighting to preserve their beauty.
  • Keep in mind that temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit can cause wax to soften, so store your candles in a cool, dry place if you won't be lighting them for a while.

Why coconut apricot wax?
Our coconut apricot wax blend is a natural and sustainable wax blend made from a combination of coconut and apricot oils. Not only is it eco-friendly, but it also has a clean burn and produces less soot than traditional waxes. Plus, it can hold a high concentration of fragrance oils to give you a long-lasting and strong scent. And let's not forget the best part - it looks SO creamy and pretty on any bookshelf!

What kind of wicks do you use? Do they contain lead?
Let's talk about wicks! Depending on the scent we use, the type of wick may vary. However, the majority of Literari candles have zinc core wicks. These wicks are made with all-natural fibers and help to spread the scent beautifully throughout the coconut wax we use. Oh, and in case you were wondering, we NEVER use lead wicks - they're actually banned in the US!

Do I really need to trim the wick?
Hey there, bookish candle lover! Before lighting up your Literari Goods candle, be sure to trim the wick to 1/4" for a perfect burn. If you notice smoke or soot, don't worry, just extinguish the flame, trim the wick, and relight to get back to reading.
Without proper trimming, the wick can "mushroom" and cause lots of problems like flickering, smoke, or soot.

Why am I getting  small puffs of smoke coming from my candle’s wick and flame?
Don't worry, it's quite common! There are a few possible reasons for this. First, check to make sure your wick is trimmed properly. Secondly, keep an eye out for any drafts in the area, such as from windows or vents, which can interfere with the flame and produce smoke. Another factor to consider is if your candle is placed in a spot where it may be disturbed by people walking by. However, if the puffs of smoke aren't constant, there's no need to stress about it.

There is a mushroom head on my wick after burning? What is it?
Have you noticed a weird mushroom-like shape on your candle's wick after burning it? Don't worry, this is actually normal! It's called a carbon buildup, also known as a "mushroom." It can occur with any type of wick and wax, but it's more common in highly fragranced candles. The fragrance oil travels up the wick while it burns and creates this mushroom shape on the end of the wick. Simply trim it off before relighting your candle, and you'll be good to go!

How can I avoid making the candle smoke when I extinguish the flame?

The best way to extinguish the flame is with a snuffer. This will help you avoid excess smoke or splattered wax when you blow it out. If you can’t avoid blowing out your candle, do so very gently.

What are Scent Notes?
Have you ever wondered what makes a candle smell so heavenly? It's all in the scent notes! There are three kinds of scent notes in a candle: top notes, middle notes (also known as heart notes), and base notes.

The first scent you get when you light a candle or smell an unlit candle is called the top note. Think of it as the introduction to the candle's story. Once the top note fades a bit, you get to experience the middle notes, which make up the heart of the candle's scent. Finally, after about an hour of burning, the base notes come to life and reveal the true and actual scent of the candle. This is the mix of the middle and base notes. So next time you light a candle, pay attention to the different scent notes and watch as the fragrance story unfolds!
